Good toddler puzzleAug 24, 2010 I bought this puzzle for my 1-year-old daughter and she loves it! She mostly enjoys flinging the pieces around but does try to put the puzzle back together. The shapes and knobs are the perfect size and five months later it's still in good shape - even though she's a drooler and a chewer. There was a small amount of sawdust inside the puzzle when it arrived, but it was nothing a paper towel couldn't take care of. I'm happy with the product and would recommend it to others.
BEAUTIFUL BUT POOR QUALITYAug 18, 2010 I was very excited about buying a Melissa & Doug puzzle for my one year old son but I was very disappointed with the product I received. Sure, the puzzle is beautiful but it has tiny pieces of the wood everywhere. I tried cleaning it but it didn't work and I don't feel it is safe for my son to play with it. As one of the other reviews says, they definitely need better quality control!

Contains LEAD- potentially TOXIC for your child!Jun 29, 2010 I bought two of the Melissa and Doug puzzles and decided to test them for lead before letting my 9 month old chew on the pieces. This type of puzzle came up POSITIVE FOR LEAD using Lead Check swabs! I would rethink buying one of these as lead exposure has been linked to numerous health problems. This company claims to offer safe, non-toxic toys that they rigorously test for the presence of chemicals. I was initially glad to find toys made from "wood" rather than the usual plastic. After finding lead in this puzzle meant for toddlers, I am appalled at how little we actually know as consumers in this country. Please do not give this puzzle to any child! Who knows how many other Melissa and Doug products contain the same materials... they have certainly lost a customer in me!
The ideal first puzzleMar 01, 2010 This is our first kid, and this was his first puzzle. There have been many other puzzles since, but none quite match this one. Here's a short list of its merits, none of which would have occurred to me:
1) We bought this when our son was just 8 months old (it was on sale). For the next six months, the pieces became chew toys, objects to manipulate with his hands, fun wood pieces to clap together, etc. It had a life before it had a life as a puzzle.
2) When he finally started to use it as a puzzle (around 14 months), he couldn't manipulate the pieces into the slots fully, but matching both color and shape made it easy for him to decide where the pieces should go.
3) As he learned how to slide the pieces into the appropriate slots, the large knobs were key. Little brains figure out how puzzles work well before little hands can carefully slide the pieces into place.
4) Because these are shapes, the puzzle pieces can fit in multiple directions (oval and rectangle can be up or down, 4 directions for a square, 3 for a triangle, etc).
5) Now, at 17 months, our son has barnyard puzzles and wheeled-vehicle puzzles. He still has no interest and keeps going back to this one. There's something -- perhaps the primary colors, the ease and geometry -- that he likes.
Not usual Melissa & Doug quality...Feb 18, 2010 I am sorta bummed that this puzzle shows the jig saw cuts. All of my other M&D puzzles dont have that. And all the pictures on the actual puzzle peices are off center... But my son loves it as I knew he would.
