5 Tips for Balancing Work and Family
In today’s hectic world, it is easy to get lost in the demands of schedules and deadlines. All to often, we get so busy with our lives than we forget to slow down long enough to notice how wonderful out lives are. The art of balancing work and family can be a difficult and overwhelming task, but these tips should lead you in the right direction of balance and harmony.
Leave Work at Work It does your family no good if you come home every day by five, but you’re distracted by problems at the office until midnight. If there is a crisis, deal with it before you come home or vow not to think about it until the next day.
Prioritize Sometimes you have to work over or travel for your business and there is just no way around it. Stop beating yourself up over it and commit yourself to being home for the important things like Halloween and Championship Little League games.
Take Time for Yourself While you may not believe it, taking some quality you time will make you a better parent and a more successful employee. Burning yourself out doesn’t help your kids or your career.
Simplify Frozen dinners never hurt anyone and an occasional trip through the drive-thru will save you the time and hassle of making dinner. Use that saved time to play a board game with your kids.
Get Creative Create a periodic activity that is fun and special for the entire family, but centered on your kids. Children will cherish this special event and you can catch up on things you might have missed. We have family slumber parties in the living room one weekend a month. We watch movies, eat popcorn, and fall asleep in sleeping bags on the living room floor. My daughter looks forward to that all month.
The important thing to remember is that no one is perfect, no one can do it all, and that you are your harshest critic.
